Martha Henrickson, Snow March 25 2006 - May 7 2006For more than thirty five years, Martha Henrickson’s photographs have depicted the complex interrelationships between humanity and the natural environment. Her images of post-industrial urban landscapes and of sea, mountains and railways have focused on how we preserve and relate to the natural world. This recent series of work was inspired by a snowy day in which the artist captured the movement of passing, blowing snow through her door. The grainy, rugged texture of her images is echoed in the grid of the screen door through which she photographs, giving a tangible sense to the natural landscapes while at the same time pointing to the mediation involved in our contemporary views of nature and our distance from it. This screen, like the car or train windows or sight-seeing viewers she has photographed through in the past, serves to highlight the act of looking - from the inside. |
