The Nupe (noo-pey) are an ethnic group in northern Nigeria. They are renowned for bas-relief carving on every ritual and domestic item they make. These posts are thought to have come from men's initiation structures where they functioned architecturally. One end was sunk into the earth, the other supported a roof over a veranda.
