Elemental Sound, 1987, by James Caswell, is on view in the permanent collection at the Gardiner Museum. Recognized for his groundbreaking approach to ceramics, Caswell developed a distinctive style of non-cylindrical vessels that combine a painterly use of colour with unexpected forms, challenging the traditional spherical shapes typically associated with the medium.
Elemental Sound was first exhibited in 1988 at the Jane Corkin Gallery as part of the solo exhibition Jim Caswell: The Eccentric Vase. Caswell was born in Winnipeg, worked in California, served as an artist-in-residence at Sèvres, France, and died in 2015. He was a recognized artist known for his postmodernist sculptural ceramics and was active in the California art scene for decades.
