Biography

A Dadaist collagist–turned-photographer, Erwin Blumenfeld began publishing his fashion shoots in the late 1930s. Blumenfeld transformed both the models and their clothes into collage-like elements. An experimenter and innovator, he produced an extensive body of work throughout his career including black and white nudes, celebrity portraiture, advertising campaigns and his renowned fashion photography. In the 1940s and 1950s his work appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Life, Cosmopolitan and many other American and international publications. He took more covers for Vogue than any photographer before or since. Blumenfeld’s unique and masterful combination of elegance and eroticism transformed fashion into high art.
